Health Matters Volume 1 Spring 2005

How do they do it?

Name: Gabrielle Miller
Occupation: Actress
Hometown: Vancouver
Age: 31

Health Matters: Do you consider yourself a healthy person?
Gabrielle Miller: Absolutely. I feel like I have a really healthy background. I was raised vegetarian by my parents and am really conscious of what I eat. I was brought up that way.

HM: What is your personal health philosophy?
GM: I don't really have one. I just don't eat animals. I want to cause as little pain as possible. I keep active and take care of myself and try not to eat bad food.

HM: Do you also avoid animal by-products?
GM: I don't have eggs, but I will eat cheese without rennet. I prefer drinking soy milk.

HM: Do you see a doctor regularly?
GM: Yes, once a year. If there is a health issue that isn't just passing like a flu, I'll seek advice from a doctor. For the most part, I really like a preventative and holistic approach to health and keeping yourself healthy so you don't have to go and see the doctor so much.

HM: What other kinds of medical professionals do you see?
GM: I have a chiropractor I've been going to since I was 16. I danced when I was younger and have back problems. I've been to Chinese doctors and homeopaths, but I'm not on a regular program with anyone right now.

HM: Do you smoke?
GM: No.

HM: Do you indulge in fast food, chocolate, or anything else?
GM: I never eat fast food. I think it's so bad for you and everyone should go see "Super Size Me". Its so gross; I absolutely do not get fast food, but I love chocolate and desserts, so once in a while I indulge. I will also indulge in pasta and a glass of wine.

HM: What's your exercise regimen like?
GM: I like yoga and occasionally pilates. I go hiking when I'm in L.A. I really, really love being in nature. When I'm in Vancouver, I sometimes go to a mountain called the (Stawnus) Chief. I walk with girlfriends to get exercise and to catch up. My best friends and I spend a lot of tim walking by the ocean when I'm in Vancouver.

HM: Do you take supplements or vitamins?
GM: When you are a vegetarian, you have to make sure you get enough protein and obviously the best food is real food (for getting vitamins and nutrients). I take supplements which is greens plus protein. It's great for vegetarians. You get 25 grams of protein and the equivalent of six organic salads. I also take calcium, magnesium, liquid iron and a flax oil.

HM: Do you do anything for your mental health?
GM: I go to church once a week, a non-denominational church, to centre myself and be in the presence of other people who are there for the same things. There's power in that. I try to relax and meditate each day. I used to meditate with my dad when I was a little girl. It was fun.

HM: How do you balance a busy career with a healthy lifestyle?
GM: Well, I think the word balance is really important. I just try to keep things in perspective and set time aside and do the things that make me happy. For me, it's the hikes and time with friends. Having a busy career is important and fun, and to put your energy into what you love to do gives you more energy, but it's not everything. The most important things to me are family and friends and the time I spend with them. When I'm shooting "Corner Gas", I'm sometimes working 14-hour days, but even so, there is the lunch hour or other times to regroup. In the summer, I occasionally get off early so I can go for a run or walk, which is great.
